Coastal Life In Zanzibar
In 2017, I spent an extended period in Zanzibar, where I became fascinated by the local women who worked along the shoreline, foraging for shellfish and farming seaweed in the shallows. Their brightly printed wrap dresses and headscarves contrasted beautifully with the physical nature of their work, creating a striking colour palette and compelling subjects for these paintings.
With art materials difficult to obtain, I began painting on the brown paper bags widely used across the island. Their folds, creases and texture became an integral part of the work. Some later pieces were produced on canvas after my return to France. Much of the original collection has now sold, but I intend to revisit it using the extensive photographic material gathered during my stay.
Threading Nature
I am always looking to innovate and always curious about trying out new and abstract materials to work with, things that are available and common place bits and pieces that we may otherwise send to landfill or put in the recycle bin. This led me to create a small collection using cardboard salvaged from packing and boxes and old thread, creating textured tableaus with illustrations of lesser celebrated creatures such as snails and slugs to a mighty blue whale. It evolved from a side project, something I could do whilst watching the TV. sort of needlework doodles.
Sleeping Beauties
Death is part of the natural cycle of life; this study was of wildlife in an around my home in France. While there is so much life around us. I also found many animals that had sadly come to the end of life but still maintained their beauty, so I decided to document them even though they had passed. It may seem a little macabre, but I was struck by how they still looked perfect in their fur and plumage before the inevitable process of decay had begun.
Birds Of the Viaur
Living close to the Viaur, one of Frances most wild and immaculate river courses I have the wonderful opportunity to sketch the wildlife, mainly the herons and birds of prey which congregate around the weir at the village of Laguepie. Often hunting confidently among the swimming tourists. these works are large works created with oil on canvas but embellished with textural elements made with tin foil and old sweet wrappers ( again experimenting with unconventional materials).
The Frozen Water Trough
Abstract interpretations of the reflections from a frozen water trough, again, using unconventional materials such as tin foil and sweet wrappers to add texture to the imags created in Acrylic paints.
the ‘grotesques’
During the summer of 1982, I had a holiday job in the York Minster bookshop. I became fascinated by the extraordinary stone figures carved into the canopies of the Chapter House. Dating largely from the 13th century, these grotesques have exaggerated faces, expressions and gestures, and there has long been speculation that some may caricature members of the clergy, local characters or people known to the medieval masons.
This collection is a selection of those wonderfully expressive figures, sketched during my time at the Minster using pencil and pastel.
